Yoga for Seniors Teacher Training

DATES: 10/20 - 10/23 2017!

To be held with ShivaShakti School of Yoga & Healing Arts @ 47 Main Street, Tenants Harbor

According to a recent Yoga Alliance and Yoga Journal report on Yoga in America, 38% of people practicing yoga (or starting their practice!), are 55 and older. The number of Americans practicing yoga has nearly doubled in the last four years. The senior population in America is expected to rise to over 80 million souls by 2050. If you are a yoga teacher, teaching adult classes, you will be asked to meet the particular needs of this enthusiastic population of students, but you may find yourself unsure about just what to teach.

In Yoga for Seniors we will address common physical issues that will need accommodation in your class, for example: osteoporosis, arthritis, COPD or CAD. Learning to create skillful modifications for older students, some coming to yoga for the first time, will grow your ability to offer the gifts of yoga with confidence. Adapting to the needs in the room will allow for a strong, challenging, but equally relaxed and meditative practice.

Each day will include a practice, meditation, teaching techniques and a lecture. We will discuss the spiritual issues of aging, as well as how to create a meaningful dialogue with doctors and healthcare providers. We will go over designing a chair class, as well as creating classes to meet a mixed level room; how to find evidence-based statistical information from the medical world to help speak clearly to the benefits of practice.

This course is ideal for yoga teachers looking to develop their teaching to meet the needs of a growing segment of the yoga population, or seasoned yoga practitioners who work with this demographic in some other capacity, such as nurses or home health care works. Each day includes a one hour lunch break.
